SYRACUSE -- Construction crews will be holding up traffic on a busy highway.

The State Department of Transportation says the left lane of Interstate 81 Southbound is closed between Butternut Street and the Harrison Street off-ramp. The closure is expected to last around the clock for about a week. Crews will be making emergency bridge repairs.

Drivers should expect significant delays heading into the downtown area from the north, especially during rush hour. If you are driving in from the north of Syracuse, the DOT suggests taking I-481 Southbound to I-690 Westbound, then back to I-81 Southbound. The ramp from I-690 Westbound to I-81 Southbound will stay open, but there will not be a direct exit to Harrison Street.

The lane closure will also back up traffic on the ramp from I-690 Eastbound to I-81 Southbound. If you are headed for the Upstate University Hospital area, try getting off the highway at West Street and turning left onto Shonnard Street, which turns into Adams Street.

Will this lane restriction interrupt your daily drive? When construction crews are out, do you just deal with the delays or take another route to work? Leave a comment below to share your thoughts with us.
