ALBANY (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says he believes tuition benefits for countless military veterans now in college will be preserved, narrowly missing a drastic cut in aid scheduled for August.
The Democrat says his bill now passed by the House will go to President Obama. Schumer says Obama's approval is a "certainty."
The legislation allows students receiving tuition benefits under a 2008 law to continue to receive the financial assistance they were promised. Those students will not be subject to cuts under a 2010 law that caps the aid to students attending private colleges at $17,500.
The program is known as the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill.
