SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Police have identified the officer involved in a deadly shooting this weekend. The department says Officer Gordon Quonce III, 29, shot and killed Dominique Smith, 21, early Saturday morning.

Police originally pulled a car over at the intersection of South State Street and Bear Avenue, near the Oakwood Cemetery, for turning without a signal. The say when the car stopped, Smith got out of the passenger seat and ran away. Officers chased after him. That's when Chief Frank Fowler says Smith pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers in a "threatening manner." Officer Quonce shot Smith in the neck.

Quonce is a four year veteran of the force. This is the first time he has been involved in a shooting incident.

The Onondaga County District Attorney's Office is still investigating the incident.
