RENSSELAER (AP) -- The operators of New York's electric grid have unveiled a $74 million "smart grid" initiative to boost energy efficiency and save the state millions of dollars a year.

The New York Independent System Operator, or NYISO, held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a $35.5 million control center across the Hudson River from Albany in Rensselaer. The control center is part of the smart grid initiative that will match electricity production with consumer demand.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York was at the event Monday. Schumer said the upgraded grid will spur more economic development across upstate New York.
