SYRACUSE -- A former Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputy will not see jail time after admitting he forged time cards earlier this year.
64-year-old Daniel Mathews of Brookline Road in Salina was arraigned in Syracuse City Court Tuesday morning, and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of official misconduct. Mathews was accused of forging his official swipe card at the Onondaga County Justice Center jail and getting paid for working while he wasn’t there. The fraud is said to have taken place from January through March of 2011.
As part of his plea deal, Mathews was sentenced to one year of conditional discharge. He also had to pay back $1,101.29 in falsely ootained pay and resigned his position with the sheriff’s office.
Mathews was a 27-year member of the sheriff’s office. He and another deputy were suspended for 30 days back in March during the investigation into the misconduct. The other deputy has not been charged in this case.
