SYRACUSE -- 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men have been stalked in their lifetime, that's according to the The National Violence Against Women Survey.
Today, Upstate Medical University is hosting a conference on the growing problem. The seminar will cover current legislation on stalking, the services and resources that are available to victims and how to identify stalking behavior.
Crime analysis shows only half of stalking cases are reported to police. Seventy-five percent of victims are stalked by someone they know. And eighty-one percent of women who are stalked by a former or current partner, are also physically assaulted.
In New York, there are 4 degrees of stalking, ranging from a misdemeanor to a felony.
In the city of Syracuse, there were 13 stalkings arrests in 2010. There are already 11 in 2011.
