ROCHESTER -- 32 passengers aboard the The Ride of Steel roller coaster at Darien Lake were forced to evacuate the ride on stairs high above the ground Thursday night after a malfunction.

This is the same ride that is at the center of a state investigation after a double leg amputee was tossed from his seat and died last month. The ride is now closed pending an investigation.

Darien Lake, in a statement, said: The Ride of Steel roller coaster experienced a mechanical failure. The train automatically stopped on the coaster's lift, approximately half way up the track, when a chain broke. There were 32 passengers onboard who were safely evacuated according to standard operating procedures. TV station WKBW-TV in Buffalo is covering the story here

TV station WGRZ-TV has an image of some of the passengers getting off the ride after the malfunction.

Last month you may recall the tragic death of Army Sgt. James Hackemer, 29, who was a double amputee and fell from the Ride of Steel coaster last month.
