ALBANY (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill into law that will allow governments to donate their used computers to senior citizens and the poor, in addition to schools and nonprofit groups.

The bill signed Monday is aimed at improving computer literacy for those who may not be able to afford a computer.

The new law allows municipalities to donate surplus computers, computer software and computer equipment to eligible seniors and low-income residents.

Municipalities had been restricted to donating to schools, libraries and nonprofit groups for use by the disabled.

State Sen. John Bonacic and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee say their bill will make the best use of tax dollars after the computer equipment ends its service in government offices.
