Deputy Kurt Wyman was bured at Arlington National Cemetery
VIRGINIA -- A fallen Oneida County Sheriff's deputy has been laid to rest.
Deputy Kurt Wyman, 24, was buried Wednesday morning at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. In addition to being a sheriff's deputy, Wyman als served as a Marine.
Deputy Wyman was shot and killed on June 7th during a long standoff. Investigators say 41-year-old Christian Patterson had threatened to kill his girlfriend, so officers were called to his home on Knoxboro Road in Knoxboro. Patterson's girlfriend was able to get out, but Patterson barricaded himself in the house and kept police in a standoff for several hours.
According to the sheriff's department's report, Patterson had been knocked down by a foam bullet when Deputy Wyman moved in to take him into custody. Police say Patterson then regained control of his gun and shot Wyman. Other officers then fired back, seriously wounding Patterson. Patterson was arraigned a few weeks later on multiple charges, including aggravated murder.
A memorial service for Wyman was held one June 13th in Utica. Hundreds of police officers and Marines came out to honor Wyman and show their support. Wyman's widow, Lauren, was also there with the couple's young son and newborn daughter, Adyson Jynette Wyman. Lauren went into labor when she heard about her husband's death.
