Antique show almost ended last year, but is back for 40th year
Marcia Sweet is busy setting up her booth at the Madison-Bouckville Antique Show.
She's been selling everything from jewelry, to antique signs and pottery here for the last two decades. "We're hoping it's as good as it always has been," said Sweet. "We're trying to make some money but it's difficult in this economy. It's even harder on antiques because they are a luxury item."
Just a few spots down is first-timer Bruce Beck, his booth is all about buttons.
"We're one of the largest antique button dealers in the world," he said. And Beck knows shoppers may be on a budget. He says his items range from $25 to several thousand. "I think people are going to come prepared to buy. The good quality stuff sells itself. I think we are going to see a lot of people," he said.
"We've been coming for about 8 years. usually they get a tremendous crowd. And everyone appreciates our stuff," said vendor Susan Johannes.
Forty thousand people are expected this weekend. The Madison-Bouckville Antique Show almost ended last year when the founder sold the field that hosted it. The new owner was going to farm the 90-acre plot of land, until a new organizer stepped in and struck a deal to lease the land. It saved the show and keeps the 4-decade tradition going.
"We like to look at glassware, and I like antique watches," said shopper Eddie Hess. "You see a lot of stuff here that you don't find anywhere else." And this year there is more to find. Dealers are up 20 percent, and come from 27 different states. It's estimated the show is a $1.5 million boost to the local economy.
"This event is very important to Madison County, the tourism department derives a huge chunk of their budget through the hotel room tax," said Tom Tarry, President of The Results Group which is promoting the show.
The show officially opens Thursday for early birds. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, admission is free after 10 AM, but it does cost money to park. New this year, beer and wine is available, there are carnival rides for the kids, an antique auction and an expert from the television show 'Antiques Roadshow' will be available to appraise your collectibles.
