GEDDES -- Authorities say a man committed suicide in a parking lot outside the New York State Fair where he had attended a concert with wife on the fair's opening day.
State Police spokesman Jack Keller said Friday that the 39-year-old man from Rochester shot himself around 11:45 p.m. Thursday outside his vehicle parked in a lot near gate 3 of the fairgrounds in the Syracuse suburb of Geddes.
Keller says the man had argued with his wife while walking to their vehicle after attending the Train and Maroon 5 concert that ended around 11:30 p.m.
He says the man shot himself in the head with a handgun. He was pronounced dead an hour later at a Syracuse hospital.
State Fair director Dan O'Hara told CNY Central Friday afternoon that the man was a member of law enforcement, and possessed a registered weapon. He did not specify which department or municipality the man worked for.
"The firearm was legal and it was registered, and I just feel terrible for the family and my prayers are with them. Those things are just unfortunate," said O'Hara.
The man's name has not been released.
The shooting occurred at the end of the opening day of the fair's 12-day run.
