Iraq war veteran surrenders after 4 hours
A man described as a suicidal Iraq war veteran held Yates County sheriff's deputies at bay for four hours on Friday night, before surrendering peacefully.
They were called to Second Milo Road, in Milo (about 5 miles southeast of Penn Yan) about 5:25 Friday evening, on reports of a man with a long gun wanting to harm himself. Deputies set up road blocks and a perimeter around a wooded area, and Yates County 911 warned residents within a one mile area of the standoff. A relative of the 27-year old man, and a Sheriff's negotiator started talking via cell phone. At one point the man gave up his shotgun, but reportedly confonted officers with a knife.
About four hours into the incident he surrendered from a home that had been evacuated.
No charges have been placed against the man, who is now getting a mental health evaluation at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan.
