The approach of Hurricane Irene is causing flights and trains to be cancelled, and some travelers in Central New York are being affected.

In New York City, the three major airports-- LaGuardia, Kennedy, and Newark--closed at noon for arriving flights. Departing flights are scheduled to be shut down Saturday night.

At Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, about one dozen flights were cancelled because of the closures. Airport officials say, in general, airlines try to notify passengers ahead of time. However, some people were at the airport making last minute changes.

Anthony Brauchle is trying to get to Fort Lewis. He says he was supposed to fly to New York City on Sunday, but his flight was cancelled. Now, he's planning to fly out Tuesday.

"I might have to take a couple leave days off," says Brauchle.

Right now, Hancock officials say the airport is in a holding pattern, waiting to see when the other airports will reopen. They are also preparing for flights to be diverted to Syracuse.

Amtrak is also canceling East Coast trains. According to the company's press release, there were service reductions beginning Saturday, and no trains will operate in the Northeast on Sunday.
