ALEXANDRIA BAY, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a California man died after he was hit by a boat while swimming between two islands in Alexandria Bay.

The Watertown Daily News reports that Peter Hendley of Hayward, near Oakland, was swimming from Grenell Island to Murray Island Tuesday afternoon in the bay on Lake Ontario. He was towing a small buoy to make him more visible but police say steady winds, whitecaps and the sun's glare may have made it difficult to see him.

A 24-foot boat piloted by Thomas Kernan struck the 66-year-old Hendley about 2:30 p.m. He was pulled aboard the boat and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hendley was swimming alone, as he often did.

Police say no charges are anticipated.
