CAMILLUS -- Alec Baldwin, star of NBC's "30 Rock," says sports are important for kids and communities and he's backing it up.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports the actor dropped by Camillus and donated $25,000 to the Northrop family on Wednesday to help save the West Genesee School District's modified sports teams.

Baldwin's mother and sister live in Camillus, outside Syracuse.

A group of parents, including Dana and Kris Northrop, are trying to raise $75,000 after the district cut funding. The goal is to allow 12 coaches to return and give about 300 more seventh- and eighth-graders the chance to play on modified sports teams.

They mentioned the fundraising to Baldwin's sister.

The actor told the parents if they raised $50,000, the Alec Baldwin Foundation would kick in the rest.

Baldwin also spent time at the New York State Fair on Wednesday, working a booth to support his mother's cancer charity.
