GEDDES -- A popular ride at the New York State Fair is operating again after people got stuck on upside down Thursday night.
Strates Show General Manager George Weston says a large person got on the Top Spin ride, but did not properly fit inside the two safety bars. The person put a lot of pressure on those safety bars, which set off sensors within the ride as though someone was trying to undo the locking device. The ride shut down, leaving passengers upside down for two minutes, according to Weston.
Operators opened the air brake to bring the ride back down. Inspectors were immediately called in to check the ride and gave it the green light. The fair's ride inspector checked the ride and ran it about a dozen times before allowing passengers back on.
Weston says the incident shows the ride's safety precautions work. He says ride operators try to accommodate everyone who wants to ride, and letting that particular passenger on was a judgement call.
Assistant Fair Director Troy Waffner tells the Syracuse Post-Standard nobody was hurt and no one had to be rescued after the ride shut down Thursday night.
The Top Spin ride rocks back and forth and flips passengers in a circle.
