A Fort Drum soldier has died after contracting rabies.
According to officials at Fort Drum, Specialist Kevin Shumaker of California died in a hospital on Wednesday. He was 24 years old. How and where Shumaker contracted rabies remains under investigation. Officials say it's been determined that Shumaker did not contract rabies in New York State.
Shumaker joined the Army in February 2009. He is survived by his mother and stepfather.
