MEXICO, OSWEGO CO. -- State Police are investigating a deadly house fire in Oswego County.

It happened just after midnight at 57 Hamilton Street in Mexico.

Police say the fire started in the garage area as gasoline fumes ignited when contacting a water tank pilot light. 41-year-old Peter Barnes, who was working on an ATV at the time, was hurt.

The fire quickly spread to the home, trapping two other people inside. 63-year-old Shirley Barnes, died in the fire due to smoke inhalation.

69-year-old George Barnes was pulled from the home by two State Troopers and Peter Barnes. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital in serious condition with smoke inhalation.

Peter Barnes was also taken to the hospital in stable condition with burns to his upper body.

The investigation continues. Police say it does not appear the fire is suspicious.
