Beyond President Obama's plan that he unveiled last night to create jobs, you might be surprised by just how many companies are already desperately looking to hire more people.

Someone who works at tracking down hackers says hiring in the information security industry is as competitive as it's been since the dot com boom. And for that matter, jobs are abundant in all of IT.

"Information technology continues to increase," said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder.com. "We see increases year over year there of about 40 to 50 percent jobs on the site. Engineering is a component of that that's seen large increases."

Large enough increases that over the last 90 days, 130,000 online job ads have popped up for industrial, mechanical or electrical engineers. And that's just a fraction of the activity among online employment agencies.

"One thing that I continue to see on our website is that in August, our listings were up 20 percent year over year," Ferguson said.

The finance and financial services industries sectors are looking to add more workers too as well as some sectors that require only a minimal shift in career paths.

"Education and health, leisure and hospitality offer really strong growth opportunities without the level of skills that may be required, for example, in information technology," said John Silvia, Chief Economist for Wells Fargo.

But even for the construction workers still stung by the housing slump, analysts say there's still hope.

"They have to go through some re-training. That takes time, but it also takes a lot of willpower on the part of the individual to understand or be willing to change careers and start sometimes all over again," Silvia said.

Some labor experts say career changes may be the only way to truly change direction in unemployment.
