Voters across Central New York cast their ballots in more than 100 races throughout the area Tuesday.
Among some of the notable races:
In the Onondaga County Legislature’s 12th District, David Knapp wins the Republican Party line with 70 percent of the vote over Robert Cox. Elsewhere in the county, incumbent Bob Warner loses the primary in the 13th District to Derek Shepard. Warner can still run in November on the Conservative line.
In Utica, two Republicans ran in the mayoral primary. City Comptroller Michael Cerminaro faced off against Robert Cardillo. Cerminaro holds a lead right now in that race, but all precincts have not yet reported.
In Cayuga County there was a three-way Republican primary for the Springport town council. A. Edward Staher and Richard Hodges both won a bid.
In Ithaca, it was a race between three Democratic hopefuls for mayor. The three candidates were Svante Myrick, Pam Mackesey and J.R. Clairborne. Myrick, the fourth ward representative of Ithaca's East Hill area, is the winner.
Fulton saw a battle for the next mayor between Republicans Thomas Kenyon and Ronald Woodward, Sr. Woodward wins with 61 percent of the vote, and will represent the Republican Party in the November election.
In Rome, Joseph Fusco leads incumbent Mayor James Brown. Results are still coming in at this point.
In a special election for the 116th State Assembly district, Democrat Anthony Brindisi and Republican Gregory Johnson are both running to replace Utica-area Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito, who was appointed as the State Commissioner of General Services earlier this year. Brindisi currently has the lead, but not all precincts have reported.
In a U.S. Congressional race of interest, Republicans scored an upset victory out of New York City. Retired media executive Bob Turner defeated Democratic State Assemblyman David Weprin in a special election to fill the seat vacated by Anthony Weiner, who resigned in June following a sex scandal. The heavily Democratic section of Queens and Brooklyn had never elected a Republican to the House of Representatives.
