MANLIUS -- Slow down if you're driving through a school zone in Manlius.

Manlius police are out in force, targeting speeders in school zones. It comes with students now back in school for the year. It's part of a program called "Safe Routes to School."

Earlier this month, officers were distributing "School's Open" fliers, reminding drivers that school is opening soon and school speed zones are back in effect.

Today, police are saturating the six school zones with officers to make sure drivers aren't speeding. Police will be in both marked and unmarked cars.

"We want to make the roadways safe," said Manlius Police Sgt. Jeff Peckins. "We aren't out here to issue a million traffic tickets. That's why we do the informational campaigns."

If you're caught speeding in a school zone, it could mean five points on your license. Fines are often doubled in school zones.

The eight school zones being targeted include:

- Minoa Elementary on Main Street in Minoa
- Fremont Road at Fremont Elementary
- Salt Springs Road at Immaculate Conception
- Fayetteville-Manlius Road in front of Fayetteville Elementary and Wellwood Middle Schools
- Mott Road in front of Mott Road Elementary
- Enders Road in front of Enders Road Elementary and Eagle Hill Middle Schools

Speed limits in school zones are in effect during school days from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
