MASSENA (AP) -- Authorities say vandals have toppled more than 60 headstones at a northern New York cemetery, causing damage to dozens of the markers.

Police in Massena say the vandalism occurred late Friday or early Saturday at the Pine Grove Cemetery. Police Chief Timmy Currier told the Watertown Daily Times that it appeared about 65 headstones had been knocked over.

The damage was reported Saturday morning by a doctor whose office overlooks the cemetery.

Some of the toppled headstones date back to the 1800s. Cemetery officials say some can be lifted and put back in place, while others were cracked when they fell and will have to be repaired.

Police say their investigation is continuing.
