OSWEGO (AP) -- State and local law enforcement agencies are joining the U.S. Coast Guard in a training exercise aimed at preventing weapons of mass destruction from entering the country through Lake Ontario.
Tuesday's exercise is being conducted at Oswego Harbor. In addition to the Coast Guard, the FBI, New York State Police, state Department of Environmental Conservation police and the U.S. Border Patrol are participating.
Authorities say the exercise will test their ability to detect and stop radiological material being brought into the U.S. by ship or boat.
Officials say the exercise is for training purposes only, and there are no current security threats of this type against the Oswego area.
Similar training events have been held in Erie, Onondaga, Monroe and Delaware counties and in the New York City area.
