ALBANY -- If you’ve ever texted while driving on the Thruway, there’s yet another reason to put your phone down.

Police on the New York State Thruway are running "Operation Hang Up" for four days beginning Monday.

The operation will target New York State Thruway drivers using hand-held cell phones illegally for texting or talking while driving. Governor Cuomo signed a bill in July that made texting while driving a primary offense, in response to several fatal accidents in New York.

State Police Commander Major Robert Meyers says drivers who use a hand-held cell phone while driving should expect to receive a ticket.

A ticket for texting while driving can lead to a fine of up to $150 and put two points on your license. Talking on a cell phone while driving can put three points on your license. Troopers issued almost 1,000 tickets during a similar operation last fall.

The bill signed by Governor Cuomo also made it illegal to use a cell phone for other purposes while driving including to check your e-mail, browse the internet, or play games.
