BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (AP) -- A Connecticut man has entered a surprise guilty plea to murder in the 2008 killing of his former girlfriend, whose decomposing body was found in her Bridgeport home in a room padlocked from the outside.

The Connecticut Post reports that 55-year-old Adolph Sharp stunned everyone in a state courtroom in Bridgeport on Wednesday when he pleaded guilty to the beating and stabbing death of Sherryl Thomas.

The move came after Sharp, who was representing himself, decided to drop his defense in the middle of a probable cause hearing to determine if there was enough evidence to proceed to trial. He faces up to 60 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 17.

Sharp was arrested last May while riding a bike in Syracuse.
