SYRACUSE -- It's everybody's dream to hear news that they've won a ton of money for doing absolutely nothing. But many people know dreams like these are often too good to be true.

A new potential trap has surfaced in Central New York where people receive a check from several corporations including Walmart and Kohls with the Better Business Bureau's emblem at the top. There are instructions on the check to cash the money and then send around $2,000 to an IRS agent named Mary Parker.

CNY Central spoke with the Better Business Bureau this morning and they told us this is certainly an active scam in our area that has surfaced as far west as Buffalo. BBB representative Peggy Penders tells us that consumers of all ages need to be aware of these scams and make sure they protect themselves. You can find tips on what to watch out for by logging onto the Better Business Bureau's website here.
