ALBANY -- New York eliminated eye exams from the driver’s license renewal process, but Gov. Cuomo has put the changes on hold.
State officials say that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has put the new policy on hold until physicians can be consulted.
The change was made to make it easier for New Yorkers to renew licenses by mail or online through the new Internet application "MyDMV," which allows customers to set up personal online accounts to do business with the DMV.
This new process stems from Gov. Cuomo’s call to increase streamling by state agencies and reduce lines at the DMV.
The traditional eye exam policy will be continued for new and commercial licenses.
If the policy passes, New York will be one of seven states that allow license renewals without eye exams.
The Department of Motor Vehicles has not made an official statement yet.
