DEWITT -- Police Chief Eugene J. Conway reports that DeWitt Police Department has made an arrest in regards to an incident this morning at Panera Bread, 3409 Erie Blvd. in the Town of Dewitt.
At approximately 9:47 a.m. Dewitt Police Officers were dispatched to 3409 Erie Blvd. in the Town of Dewitt in regards to a larceny complaint.
An employee of Panera Bread advised 911 that a man entered the business, stole food items and exited the store. When Dewitt Police arrived at the business, the male suspect had just left the store. While officers were still searching the area, an employee reported that the male suspect was back in the store. Officer Wintermute located the suspect in the bathroom and attempted to communicate with him. The suspect refused and locked himself in a stall. After gaining access to the stall, Officer Wintermute gave the subject several commands to come out. The subject refused and continued to be combative. As Officer Wintermute tried to remove the suspect from the stall, the suspect struck him in the chin and arm with his fists. Officer MacDonald, who arrived on scene to assist, then deployed a taser to gain compliance. The suspect was not injured and was transported from the business to Dewitt Police Department. Officer Wintermute suffered a minor abrasion to his chin and arm.
Darryl E. Freeman, age 48 of Syracuse, was arrested for Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest and Harassment in the 2nd Degree. He was arraigned by the Honorable Judge Gideon and remanded the Justice Center on $2,500 cash or bond.
