FORT DRUM (AP) -- More than 500 soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division have returned to Fort Drum in recent days after spending the past year in Afghanistan.

Fort Drum officials say the first contingent made it back last Thursday, when 140 soldiers with the Combat Aviation Brigade arrived at the Army post in northern New York.

Another 170 soldiers with the division's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion returned on Saturday, followed the next day by 30 other soldiers from the HQ units.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that another 200 members of the aviation brigade returned home.

The soldiers were involved in military operations in the eastern and southern areas of Afghanistan. They were part of a multi-national command responsible for more than 23,000 soldiers, including American, Canadian, British, Australian and French troops.
