SYRACUSE -- A local center is getting grant money to help prevent suicide.

The AIDS Community Resource Center in Syracuse received more than $60,000 to launch a new mental health project for children and teens. The money comes from ON CARE, a federal funded Onondaga County initiative.

The Center also received $6,133 from the Mental Health Association to raise awareness about the suicide risk within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth population. LGBTQ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide.

The executive director at the center says, the recent suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a teen outside of Buffalo, really helped reinforce the center's determination to prevent any more suicides from happening.
