The struggling economy may be scary, but this year, Halloween sales are expected to be strong. The National Retail Federation says 7 in 10 Americans are expected to celebrate this year, and Americans are expected to spend $1 billion on children's costumes.

At Dougherty's Masquerade in Syracuse, shoppers are busy picking out their perfect costume. Owner Denise Dougherty Vinal says things are starting to pick up this season as people get excited about Halloween.

"It's the one day of the year when they can really have an escape and just forget everything they've been through the past year and just have a great time," says Dougherty Vinal.

She says even if people are on a tight budget, there are a lot of ways people can celebrate the holiday. For example, they can buy accessories or masks instead of a whole costume.

Dougherty's is also offering a 20% discount on children's costumes this month.

How much are you planning to spend this Halloween? Have you bought a costume yet for yourself or your kids? Post your comments below.
