ONONDAGA CO. -- State police have released the results of a recent campaign to combat distracted and aggressive driving.
They focused this past Tuesday on Interstate 81 in Onondaga County. Police conducted 63 tractor trailer inspectors and issued 42 violations. They also issued 52 tickets to car drivers and 15 tickets to truck drivers.
According to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, 86 percent of all crashes involving a commercial vehicle in New York State last year involved another vehicle, a bicyclist or a pedestrian.
Studies show the overwhelming majority of crashes are directly linked to the actions of the driver of either the commercial vehicle, a passenger vehicle or a combination of both.
Of the single truck crashes reported last year, a contributing factor was attributed to the actions of the truck driver 61 percent of the time. Unsafe speed was reported as a contributing factor in 16 percent of the single truck crashes, followed by driver inattention/distraction at 15 percent and failing to obey a traffic control device at 8 percent.
