21 year old in Army ROTC program reached for live wire
SALINA. ONONDAGA COUNTY -- An Army ROTC Cadet who attends Syracuse University remains in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor reached early Thursday morning.
21-year-old Thomas Feane was shocked after reaching for a downed high voltage wire on military training grounds in Salina. He is a graduate of Little Falls High School in Herkimer County.
The Onondaga County Sheriff says Cadet Feane was with two other cadets at 6:20 pm on Tuesday in a wooded area of the United States Marine Corps Reserve Center off Malloy Road in Salina. The three men were evaluating the area for a future training mission. They approached a wire that had fallen on a utility poll guy wire. Sheriff Kevin Walsh says Cadet Feane did not realize the wire was energized when he reached for it and was shocked by 34,000 volts.
Rescue crews rushed to the scene and performed CPR. They took Feane to University Hospital in Syracuse where he is listed in critical condition.
National Grid utility crews are on the Reserve Center property to repair the poll that had secured this primary power line that passed through this property.
Thomas Feane is still in critical condition at University Hospital as of 6:12 a.m.
