SYRACUSE -- Workers from the SPCA will be back at a Syracuse home Friday, removing more cats after they were found to be living in filth and squalor.
CNY SPCA Executive Director Paul Morgan says that 26 felines had been taken from the home as of Thursday afternoon, and rescuers were able to save 18 of them from the deplorable conditions.
More are still in the home but the structure of the building is unstable, making it hard to reach the animals. Some of the cats are said to be hiding in rotten walls or debris.
Workers started removing the animals from the home at 111 Beard Place near Oakwood Cemetery on Wednesday.
One dog and 11 cats found living in the house had to be put down due to severe neglect or disease. A total of 50-70 cats are believed to have been living in the building.
Morgan says the house was in bad condition and full of animal waste. He says the owner of the home is in poor health and is currently in the hospital. Syracuse Police began their investigation when they attempted to check in on the health of the homeowner.
According to the Associated Press, police say they expect to file animal cruelty charges in the case. The investigation is ongoing.
