SYRACUSE (AP) -- A federal border agent has been accused of stealing money while on the job in northern New York.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Todd Tyo of Heuvelton took the money at the Alexandria Bay port of entry on the St. Lawrence River. They declined to say how much was stolen, except that it was more than $1,000.

Tyo pleaded not guilty in Syracuse Wednesday to a single count of embezzling government funds.

The indictment says the theft was between March and August. He's on administrative leave as a customs and border protection officer because of the investigation.

Defense lawyer Steven Cohen says Tyo has been with the agency since 1996 and has an excellent record.

If convicted, Tyo could be sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $250,000.
