MANLIUS -- A 21-year-old man is charged with reckless endangerment following a shooting in the town of Manlius that happened at a bonfire party around 11:30 Saturday night but police say he never meant to shoot a person. The suspect is identified as Jeremy Messina of East Syracuse.
Investigators say the man shot, 20-year-old Stephen Comrie of Manlius, was going to an outdoor party with a group of friends and they decided to play a trick on the people already there by making animal noises in the woods.
"People at the party became very scared," said Sgt. Tina Stanton of the Manlius Police Department. "The suspect responded to his car and got a shotgun and fired 3 to 4 gun shots toward the victim."
Police say it happened in the woods near the 5600 block of Fremont Road, right down the street from East Syracuse-Minoa High School.
The investigation began after Comrie went to the emergency room at Crouse Hospital with a gunshot wounds to his face, forearm, chest and thigh.
Police say Comrie is expected to recover and that Messina turned himself into police. Messina was arraigned in town of Manlius court and taken to the Justice Center on $2,500 cash bail.
Messina was charged Sunday with felony reckless endangerment. Police didn't know if he has a lawyer.
