DENMARK, LEWIS COUNTY -- A Carthage man was killed in a Lewis County deer hunting accident.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, they are investigating a hunting accident which killed 55-year-old Arnold Camidge of Carthage.

Deputies say the man was hunting for deer with three other men around 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the town of Denmark when he was accidentally shot by another man in his hunting party.

Deputies say they arrested Travis Shampine, 19, of Carthage, for second degree manslaughter.

According to deputies, Camidge was taken by ambulance to Carthage Area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Shampine was arraigned in the Village of Lowville Court and remanded to the Lewis County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
