SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Common Councilors took action Monday on a plan that could help lower ticket prices at Hancock Airport.
They voted to give the new Airport Authority the power to hire a private security firm. The security has been provided by Syracuse Police. However, that has drawn major criticism because those police officers are charging overtime.
If a private firm provides security, it would have to follow all Transportation Security Administration rules and regulations. However, that security firm would only handle the jobs covered right now by Syracuse Police. The firm would not handle TSA screening duties.
This privatization will not mean lower airport fees right away, but it is a step to make Hancock more price competitive compared to other Upstate airports.
