SYRACUSE (AP) -- Anyone who has tried to get their pet across an international border knows that it can be difficult.
Try getting three elephants across the border.
That's what officials at Syracuse's Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park are attempting to do five years after sending two pachyderms to a safari park outside Toronto because the upstate zoo was getting crowded. While at the Ontario zoo, one of the elephants gave birth.
The Post-Standard in Syracuse reports that it has been nearly a year since the Syracuse zoo started the process of bringing its three Asian elephants back from Canada. Zoo officials say the effort is complicated because Asian elephants are endangered species and several government agencies have to approve the transfer.
Zoo officials hope to have the elephants back next month.
