WATERTOWN, JEFFERSON CO. -- Watertown police are investigating the death of a teenage boy.
16-year-old Zachary Blanchard, of 856 LeRay Street, was found shot to death in a pick up truck around 5:15 p.m. Thursday in a parking lot next to an apartment complex in Watertown. Blanchard was a student at Watertown High School.
Right now, police say the shooting appears to be accidental. He was in the parking lot of the Maple Court Apartments off Jewel Drive when a hunting rifle discharged inside a parked pick-up truck.
Watertown police tell local media outlets that Zachary Blanchard was sitting in the back seat of the extended-cab pickup around 5 p.m. Thursday when he moved the rifle and it discharged. Police say the bullet struck the teen in the head.
Police say two of Blanchard's cousins were in the truck at the time. Officials aren't saying who owns the gun.
Two witnesses are cooperating with the investigation.
