DEWITT -- The scariest and spookiest night of the year is upon us.
But as much fun as Halloween can be for children and their parents, local police are making sure it's all done safely.
In DeWitt, police officers will be out in full force as kids start making the rounds through neighborhoods. Police say they don't expect anything bad to happen, but want to be prepared for anything.
"We try to get people on the streets so that people see us," said DeWitt police officer Brenton White. "We're around in case anything was to happen."
They'll be keeping a watchful eye on trick-or-treaters and handing out glow sticks. Those glow sticks are also available at the DeWitt Police Department and can be picked up by parents all day Monday.
DeWitt Police also remind parents to be in constant communication with their kids. That means younger kids should travel with adults while older kids, who are trick-or-treating alone, should have cell phones. Police say parents should plan a Halloween route with their kids, knowing when they're leaving, where they're going and when they're returning home.
And once children are home, police say parents should check candy before letting their children take the first bite.
