ONEIDA CO. -- A Utica man is accused of leading deputies on a chase through three towns.

Oneida County Sheriff's deputies say 50-year-old Barry Smaldone, of Graham Road was driving erratically in a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer north on Route 8 in the Town of Bridgewater, swerving into oncoming traffic and onto the shoulder of the road.

When deputies tried to pull him over, they say he took off at a low rate of speed into the Town of Paris. Deputies deployed spike strips on Route 8 in the Town of New Hartford, deflating three of Smaldone's tires. After a short struggle, deputies took him into custody.

Smaldone is charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer, DWI, aggravated DWI, reckless driving, resisting arrest and several traffic violations.

He was arraigned in Paris Town Court and sent to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 bond.
