SYRACUSE -- SPCA officials say they have a person of interest in the case of dozens of cats living in deplorable conditions at a Syracuse area home. They were back at the home today to rescue more cats.
44 cats were taken out of the home at 111 West Beard Place near Oakwood Cemetery, but only half survived. Investigators believe there are about 20 or 30 more in the home. SPCA workers will be back at the home over the next few days to remove them.
Last month, they started removing cats from alleged filth and squalor. We're told the building is unstable, making it hard to reach all the animals. Some of the cats were found hiding in rotten walls or debris.
One dog and 11 cats found living in the house had to be put down due to severe neglect or disease.
SPCA Executive Director Paul Morgan has said the home was full of animal waste. He says the homeowner, who lives in a nursing home, is in poor health, and most likely won't face animal cruelty charges.
