MANLIUS, ONONDAGA CO. (AP) -- Five towns in one of upstate New York's snowiest regions say they won't plow roads owned by the county this winter because the county doesn't pay them enough to perform the work.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the towns Camillus, Clay, DeWitt, Manlius and Otisco declined to sign contracts with Onondaga County this year. The newspaper reports that the county will take over plowing some 60 miles of roads in those towns.
Usually, vehicles owned by the towns plow the county-owned roads and the county reimburses the towns for the work. But the towns say the county's reimbursement rates don't cover their costs.
Instead of plowing the county roads, the town trucks will lift their plows and drive over the snow-covered roads to get to town roads that they will plow.
CNY Central spoke with Manlius Town Supervisor Ed Theobald, who says he was notified by the County that County crews would plow the roads within Manlius that fall under County jurisdiction.
