COLUMBIA, HERKIMER CO. -- A Herkimer County man is now in police custody after a 16 hour standoff with police that lasted Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning.
State Police report that 52-year-old Donald Brown surrendered himself without incident around 8:00 a.m. Troopers say Brown will be taken to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Utica for a mental health evaluation.
Since 4 p.m. Monday afternoon, Brown had been barricaded alone in his residence on State Route 28, according to State Police. He was believed to be armed with guns. He reportedly threatened to shoot police if any officers entered the home, according to our sister station WKTV in Utica.
Troopers were originally called to the residence after a reported domestic dispute had taken place. Hostage negotiators were called to the scene shortly thereafter and communicated with Brown.
The standoff caused the closure of State Route 28 south to Route 20, between Mohawk and Richfield Springs.
Brown is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, a felony. Police say they found two assault rifles, which are illegal to possess.
Brown was arraigned in the Town of Columbia Court and is being held on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
