SYRACUSE (AP) -- An upstate New York man has pleaded guilty to stabbing two female neighbors, one critically, during a quarrel in downtown Syracuse.

Gary Vandermark of Syracuse could get a 15-year prison sentence on December 5 for attacking Theresa Costa-Hackett, who almost died from knife wounds in the chest that ruptured her heart, and Lisa Krigbaum, who sustained cuts to her face and arms.

A prosecutor, Michael Kasmarek, told the Post-Standard of Syracuse that the motive for the Sept. 11 attack remains unclear.

The 51-year-old Vandermark pleaded guilty Monday to five counts of first-degree and second-degree assault. The 48-year-old Costa-Hackett was critically wounded but recovered from her injuries.

The prosecutor told the newspaper that a passer-by intervened to stop the attack by kicking Vandermark off of Costa-Hackett.
