SYRACUSE -- About sixty families living on Benedict and Berwyn Avenues along East Colvin Street in Syracuse were told to leave their homes after two railroad cars derailed near Syracuse University. One of the cars was a propane tanker.
Police and Fire officials escorted some neighbors back to their homes to get medication or cell phones. Some neighbors may not be able to return home tonight.
The City of Syracuse and the Red Cross have set up a temporary shelter at the Westcott Community Center at 826 Euclid Avenue. Syracuse University students and staff also have the option of going to the Goldstein Student Center on SU's South Campus.
Centro buses were available to take neighbors to the Westcott Community Center if they needed transportation.
Mayor Stephanie Miner said families could call the Westcott Community Center at (315) 701-0303 if they are trying to locate a family member.
