In Onondaga County alone 370+ children await homes
Syracuse's Oncenter hosts an adoption info fair on Friday morning
'Celebrating a family for every child' is the theme of National Adoption Day, coming up this Friday.
Here in Onondaga County, it's being marked by a formal adoption ceremony for over 70 children who've found 'forever' homes at Syracuse's Oncenter. And, fostering and adoption agencies make the happy occasion an information open house as well, to encourage more people to get involved in helping children.
Kevin Harrigan, an attorney who specializes in adoptions, says the process can be long but it's not terribly difficult, and the need to place children is great: in Onondaga County alone, 370 children are on the waiting list. Statewide it's in the thousands.
Friday morning's Oncenter event is open to the public: doors opean at 8:30am, with the adoption ceremony at 9:30am (come see all the happy families!). In addition to the information booths, the 'Heart Gallery' that's been on display at the Onondaga County Courthouse will be at the Oncenter for the morning. If you cannot go but have questions about adoption, Harrigan will answer at 671-4248.
