MASSENA, ST. LAWRENCE CO (AP) -- Authorities say a northern New York man who had recent run-ins with police apparently committed suicide as officers closed in on him following reports that he had fired a shotgun.

Police in Massena tell local media outlets that 19-year-old Derek Ober reportedly had a fired a shotgun twice while at a residence in the village Wednesday morning and was threatening to kill himself.

Officials say he was later spotted holding a shotgun while walking toward his home. Soon after police arrived, they heard a gunshot.

Police say Ober died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities say no shots were fired by police.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that Ober had been charged hours earlier with shoplifting from a liquor store and was arrested for drunken driving last Sunday.
