With lake effect snow pounding parts of Central New York and a chilly start to the day, it's important to remind people about caring for your pets in the cold.
The Central New York SPCA has issued a number of tips for pet safety. Keep your pets inside when it's cold outside. Never leave your dog or cat along in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
When taking your dog for a walk, keep a leash on at all times, especially when its snowing. After the walk, make sure to wipe off any snow or ice from your dog's legs and stomach. When bathing your dog, make sure to take extra care to dry them off completely during the winter months.
Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep away from all drafts. Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets. They can get dehydrated in the winter too.
